Job Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Mental Health Nurse with proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 or 2 to join our dedicated team. This role is ideal for a nurse passionate about delivering inclusive mental health care to Deaf and hard-of-hearing service users, as well as those with diverse communication needs.
You will work within a multi-disciplinary team to provide high-quality, person-centred care to individuals experiencing a range of mental health challenges. Your BSL knowledge will be invaluable in enhancing communication, reducing barriers to care, and supporting recovery-focused interventions.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive assessments of mental health needs, including risk assessments and care planning.
Deliver evidence-based interventions and therapeutic support to service users.
Use British Sign Language to communicate effectively with Deaf or hard-of-hearing patients, relatives, and carers.
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists.
Promote patient engagement through accessible communication and culturally competent care.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with legal and professional standards.
Support service users in crisis, providing de-escalation and safety planning.
Contribute to the development of inclusive practice within the service.
Requirements:
Essential:
Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with valid NMC registration.
Experience working in community or inpatient mental health settings.
BSL Level 1 or 2 qualification (must be willing to work towards Level 2 if currently Level 1).
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Commitment to equality, diversity, and person-centred care.
Desirable:
Experience working with Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.
Previous experience in delivering culturally competent or accessible mental health services.
Knowledge of Deaf culture and the social model of disability.
