An opportunity has arisen for a Strategic Planner within the Secondary System Planning Team based in one of National Grid Electricity Distribution’s offices.Reporting to the Secondary System Planning Manager, within the Distribution System Operator, you will be working within a small team of 11kV and LV Planners to identify the areas of secondary investment across the entire region.The Secondary System Planning Team are responsible for the comprehensive analysis of NGED’s high voltage (6.6kV and 11kV) and low voltage (230/400V) Distribution Systems, identifying and assisting in the prioritisation of areas of secondary investment, and determining the optimal solution to network constraints for various forecast scenarios, taking into consideration work planned by parallel teams, such as Field Operations.The team work closely with the Secondary Network Design Team, who are responsible for the subsequent stage of project delivery, and localised Field Operations teams, to help maximise efficiency and accomplish common objectives.The successful candidate will be required to hold a Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 (or equivalent qualification deemed to be at the same level) and if not already attained will be required to undertake Level 3.Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Our vision is to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future and we are doing this in a fast-moving industry with an increasing focus on tackling climate change, exploring new energy sources that are renewable, low carbon, and improve efficiency to meet demand.Main ResponsibilitiesSystem planning to include widescale analysis of the low voltage network for incremental load growth across existing consumers, new strategic developments and adjacent high voltage reconfigurationPlanning of low voltage network reinforcement schemes, and the occasional high voltage scheme, taking into consideration asset replacement and accepted new connection schemesElectrical analysis of the system, including voltage, load flow and fault level analysisMeeting tight deadlines for identification of network constraints and associated investment strategyProvision of technical support and coordination with the Secondary Network Design Team and Field Operations Planners across the businessTaking into consideration the impact of projects on customers, the public and the environmentAssisting in the development of tooling and methodology used within the Secondary System Planning Team and Secondary Network Design TeamSupporting 11kV Strategic Planners with annual collation of anticipated future load connection data and customer behaviour data to support preparation of Network Development Plans, Long Term Development Statements & Load ForecastsLiaison with the Flexibility Team to evaluate the use of flexibility services to defer traditional reinforcement or reduce network riskThe Ideal CandidateIdeally the successful candidate will have experience of:The planning of load related investment projects in accordance with Engineering DirectivesExperience in using Connect/LV, VisNet Design, WinDEBUT, or equivalent network analysis software and the use of Bentley EMU, GE Smallworld, or equivalent GIS is essentialA working understanding and experience of HV system design would be advantageousYou will be logical and numerate as well as having excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.We will consider applicants who do not currently hold all the necessary skills to carry out the role, but have the confidence and ability to reach the required standard with training. A flexible attitude is essential as you may be asked to undertake other duties to assist the team in meeting its objectives.
