What You'll Be Doing:
Join our team as a Band 6 Acute Occupational Therapist typically works in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital, and plays a key role in supporting patients who are acutely ill or recovering from surgery or injury. Your role involves assessing, treating, and supporting patients to maximize their independence in daily activities despite their medical conditions. Here's a breakdown of their responsibilities:
1. Assessment and Treatment Planning:
* Comprehensive Assessments: Conduct assessments to understand patients' physical, cognitive, and psychological functioning. This includes evaluating their ability to perform daily activities like dressing, eating, bathing, and mobility.
* Goal Setting: Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs and priorities, with a focus on enhancing their independence and quality of life.
2. Intervention and Therapy:
* Therapeutic Interventions: Provide evidence-based interventions to support patients in managing and adapting to their condition, whether it's a new injury, illness, or the exacerbation of a chronic condition.
* Functional Rehabilitation: Assist patients with regaining the ability to perform daily activities through tailored exercises, adaptive equipment, and strategies.
* Home and Environment Modifications: Recommend adjustments to the home or hospital environment to help patients better function (e.g., use of assistive devices or arranging furniture to improve mobility).
3. Multidisciplinary Team Collaboration:
* Work with Medical Staff: Collaborate with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic care. They may attend multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss treatment plans.
* Discharge Planning: Work closely with the team to ensure smooth transitions from hospital to home. This includes recommending appropriate follow-up services, community resources, or equipment needs.
4. Education and Training:
* Patient Education: Provide education and support to patients and their families about how to manage their condition at home, including how to use adaptive equipment and implement recommended changes.
* Staff Training: Educate other healthcare staff on occupational therapy principles, particularly how to assist patients with activities of daily living and how to identify any potential needs for OT interventions.
5. Documentation and Reporting:
* Record Keeping: Keep accurate and up-to-date records of patient assessments, interventions, and progress, ensuring that all documentation is in compliance with healthcare policies and legal requirements.
