We are currently recruiting for a Transport Area Controller to join our Fleet department to cover South Wales and parts of the South West (North) region with a base location to be agreed within these areas.

You will be responsible for the after care and technical support for all National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) fleet vehicles within their area of operation, acting as a key contact for all NGED nominated drivers, managers, external customers and suppliers.

The role requires continuous awareness in terms of vehicle and driver operations in order to ensure compliance under Health & Safety and Transport legislation and the NGED granted Operators Licence, providing support and assistance as required on all fleet management issues undertaken by NGED.

Main ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Transport Manager, the role will include the management of expenditure to budget and overall responsibility for all contracts, workshops and employees under their control; ensuring safety and productivity is of the highest standard. Further responsibilities include:


Hold the position of Nominated Transport Manager on the NGED Operator Licence(s) applicable to the role.
Ensure vehicles are maintained in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations, “O” Licence requirements and Ministry of Transport standards (MOT, P&T). Undertake internal audits to ensure compliance.
Accountable for the area revenue budget, ensuring efficient and cost effective operation of the area workshops.
Adopt “my fleet” approach ensuring optimum fleet performance, availability of strategic vehicles and facilitating vehicle movements, sales, disposals and the administration of the company asset register.
Minimise vehicle “off-road” time through performance monitoring and resource management.
Ensure team managers and other users are aware of legal requirements relating to the use of Vehicles, Trailers and Plant.
Identify means to not only improve the efficiency of the fleet but also reduce carbon emissions and the overall ‘carbon footprint’ created by the fleet.
Hold regular team briefs with each workshop, communicating current topics and updates. Promoting flexible working between workshops by moving resource around accordingly.
Manage the process of contract tendering with the Procurement department, including contract specification, supplier interviews, and performance monitoring and supplier management.
Assisting the business as required on safety related matters providing advice or leading on incident investigations e.g. fleet defects, incident investigation fleet & workshop related

The Ideal CandidateYou will have proven Fleet Workshop experience, including in-depth knowledge of Transport legislation and hold or be working towards a Certificate of Professional Competence. You will ideally be qualified in a Motor Vehicle engineering discipline i.e. City and Guilds / NVQ or equivalent at any level.

You will need to be organised with excellent communication skills as this role involves working with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. As this role requires travel across the area, you are required to hold a valid driving license, ideally Class C as a minimum.

Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Some roles require a triannual check.
