Astute’s Renewables Team is partnering with an established and growing developer of renewable energy biogas plants with a commitment to professional development and sustainability, to recruit a Junior Engineer for its Girvan, South Ayrshire site.

Responsibilities and duties

Reporting to the Senior Process Engineer you will:

• Liaise with the Operations team, with guidance from the Project Engineering Leader & Senior Process Engineer, to assist in scoping new projects and agree on the design scope.
• Produce engineering deliverables, including Mass/Energy Balances, BFDs, PFDs, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), equipment schedules, specifications/datasheets, and control philosophy, with support from Process Engineers.
• Provide input to layout/general arrangement drawings and support subcontracted equipment design/selection and contract document preparation.
• Support Project Engineers during the commissioning phase of major projects by ensuring P&IDs and equipment schedules are accurate, and that commissioning check sheets are completed for all equipment.
• Develop and track process improvement projects from initial scope and design development to final handover to operations, including producing Scope of Work, P&IDs, equipment schedules, conducting design reviews, and overseeing project initiation, procurement, installation, and commissioning phases.
• Promote a positive safety culture and ensure site works comply with all Safety, Health & Environmental requirements, collaborating with the local H&S Coach/Advisor to engage the site team in safety practices, contributing to safety studies (HAZID/HAZOP/LOPA), and developing/reviewing external DSEAR studies.

Professional qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following:

• Degree qualified in Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
• While not essential, some level of practical engineering experience or an industrial placement year would be advantageous.
• Able to use CAD or simulation software.
• Proficient in the use of IT such as MS Office programs.
• A Full UK Driving Licence is essential due to the remote location (s) of the plants.

The Junior Engineer role would suit someone who is:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to build rapport and relationships with clients, suppliers and stakeholders.
• Confidently able to initiate projects and produce solutions to engineering problems.
• Able to work with others and independently.
• Has a commercial awareness.
