We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who genuinely enjoys the company of young people to join our Modern Languages Team. The role is available from September 2024 until May 2025. 

The successful candidate will be required to support the development of spoken language, usually with exam classes as directed by the Head of Modern Languages/Mandarin Teacher.

The successful candidate will also be required to prepare suitable material to assist with this and to deliver cultural background lessons as requested by the Modern Languages Department.

This role is particularly suited to someone who might be interested in a career in teaching and there will be opportunities to provide bespoke experience relating to interest areas of the individual.

Main ResponsibilitiesClassroom Support


Weekly individual lessons with Advanced Higher pupils in the target language
Weekly small group oral sessions with Higher language pupils
Weekly National 5 group lesson


Occasional group sessions with younger classes

Must be a native speaker of German– E
Must have a suitable level of fluency in English-E

Excellent oral and written communication skills – E
Must have knowledge of current affairs in target language country- E
Must have up to date knowledge of any language developments- E
A knowledge of Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) – E
A languages background would be useful-D

The ability to form good relationships and connections with the pupils is one of the most important parts of the job. Patience and empathy are key attributes needed in the support for learning aspect of the role- E

About the school/organisationThe Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
