The Governance Services Team plays a key role in supporting the Council’s governance and decision-making processes. Part of the Council’s Law and Governance Service, the team helps to make sure that formal decision-making is open and transparent and provides clear accountability for the use of resources in order to deliver the Council’s priorities.

The team works with councillors, officers, partner organisations, communities and local people to ensure that decision-makers have all the information they need and that meetings run smoothly and in line with local government legislation and the council’s constitution. The Team also runs the School Appeals service for the Council and some academy schools.  This involves working with parents, panel members, schools and the Council’s Admissions Team to ensure that admission appeals and exclusion reviews are undertaken in a professional and inclusive manner and within the relevant legislative framework.

What is the job role?Do you have an interest in good governance, decision-making and administration?

We are looking for an enthusiastic team player to work in a busy team servicing School Appeals in Coventry.

This is a role with a difference!

This is a part time role.  However, we are looking for someone who doesn't want to be tied down to fixed hours every Monday - Friday.

Although the position is 22  hours per week, the hours can be annualised across the year.

So, what does that mean for you if you annualise the hours?

There is an expectation that the successful candidate would work longer hours, usually 9.00am to 5.00pm during May, June and July and at additional periods throughout the year where the service needs require.

To offset this, you would be require to work shorter periods across the remainder of the year.

Whilst we anticipate this would result in the post holder not being required to work during August and school holidays, this would be subject to service needs and planned in advance.
Who are we looking for?We are looking for someone to join the Governance Services Team to provide high-quality legal and administrative support for school appeal hearings.  This will include.

Assisting with the co-ordination of the annual cycle of school appeals
Supporting the recruitment, training and development of Panel Members
Administering and servicing school appeal hearings
Providing advice and guidance to Panel Members, parents, school representatives and officers
Developing the service to promote best practice and meet customer needs.

The skills you will bring to the role include:

A good knowledge of governance processes and experience of working in an administrative environment, ideally working within legal frameworks
Clear and well-structured written work, including reports, letters and notes
The ability to give good, sound, pragmatic, concise and clear advice to Panel Members at hearings and members of the public enquiring about the appeal process.
You will have the ability to work under pressure in a challenging but interesting environment.
